Privacy policy

Overview

Safety Score™ (https://safetyscore.net) is an independent Toronto crime map and Safety Score tool. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and your choices. We are not affiliated with Toronto Police Service, the City of Toronto, or other websites using similar names.

Information we collect

• Usage and analytics. When you visit the site, we use Google Analytics 4 to collect aggregated usage data (for example pages viewed, approximate location from IP address, browser type, and referral source). Google may set cookies or similar technologies. See Google's Privacy Policy.
• Email alert subscriptions. If you sign up for crime alerts, we store your email address, the location you subscribed to (address coordinates or neighbourhood), digest frequency, and optional score-change alert preference.
• Technical logs. Our hosting provider may log IP addresses, request URLs, and timestamps for security and reliability.

We do not sell your personal information. Crime statistics on the site come from public police open data - we do not receive your home address from police databases when you browse the map.

How we use information

• Understand how the site is used and improve it
• Send crime digest and score-change emails you requested
• Operate, secure, and troubleshoot the service

Email alerts (CASL)

Email alerts are optional. When you subscribe, we send a confirmation email - digests are not sent until you click the confirmation link (double opt-in). Each email identifies Safety Score, explains why you are receiving it, and includes a one-click unsubscribe link. You may unsubscribe at any time; that stops future emails for that subscription.

We send alert emails only for the purpose you signed up for. We do not use your alert subscription to send unrelated marketing unless we obtain separate consent.

Service providers

We use trusted providers to run the site. They process data on our behalf and only as needed to provide the service:

• Google Analytics (website analytics)
• Resend (transactional email delivery)
• Vercel (hosting)
• Neon (subscription database for email alerts)

Retention

Email subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe or we remove inactive records. Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics settings. You may request deletion of your subscription by unsubscribing or contacting us.

Your choices and rights

• Unsubscribe from alert emails using the link in any message.
• Analytics. You can block analytics cookies using browser settings or ad/privacy extensions.
• Access or deletion. Canadian residents may request access to or correction of personal information we hold. Contact us using the email below.

Children

The site is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do.
